A zine is a self-published and often small circulation publication. They were super popular in the punk era, which is why so many zines have a traditional DIY aesthetic.
Nowadays, zines can have bigger circulations and tend to be less photocopier chic and more like independent magazines. There are some great zines out there for all different types of people!
This and That Zine is an art and writing zine, meaning that we publish writing and artwork.
We are specifically inclusive of West Midlands artists, as we are born and bred in the Black Country ourselves! But we do include the work of friends somewhat further afield.
Specifically, we aim to showcase the West Midlands as a place of great cultural and artistic history. It's important for us that we raise the profiles of our artists and help them to make a career out of their passion.
The West Midlands currently has the lowest cultural engagement in the country, as well as being the place people are least likely to experience social mobility in their lifetimes. We see those as linked and we aim to bring the arts in the West Midlands into the spotlight and encourage a new generation of artistry coming from the West Midlands!
Unfortunately, we don't sell original artworks (yet).
But you can buy prints of some of our favourite pieces on our shop.
We look for writing contributions in the form of short stories, poems, personal essays and interesting interviews!
In our artwork we are happy to receive any contributions as long as they can be printed in our zine - images of sculptures are welcome, too.
We are a quarterly zine (most of the time!), which means we publish print editions every three months.
